This is a good example why “reviews” from prominent gaming sites such should be taken with a grain of salt. This title is not a train wreck and does not deserve the low scores floating around the web. A patch has been released to resolve any issues that might occur.
Points worth noting:
a)Visuals are better than expected (for the PS3 in any case). Minimal texture pop and good texture work all round. Some low resolution textures on terminals and large screen displays but nothing the player will be concentrating on. Lighting and atmospheric effects are well above average.
b)Alien creature animation is adequate with a few oddities here and there. The representation is as good as the 86’ film so I can’t really fault the developers in any meaningful way. The title is not a cakewalk especially on medium and hard difficulty levels. Campaign length is longer than the usual 5/6 hour affair especially when played on medium/hard difficulty.
c)Sound is fantastic. The range finder works like it is supposed to and creates genuine tension.
d)Squad AI is perfectly fine and is on par with similar titles such as COD, Halo, Killzone and Gears.
e)Clipping issues? What clipping issues?
f)Story is above average. If you can stomach the “stories” being presented in titles such as Rage, MW2 and Assassin’s Creed you will be just fine.
g)Local split screen is a blast but only guest access is allowed for local co-op partner. This is a real irritation as none the weapon “unlocks” and features will be retained for the guest partner.
h)Multiplayer looks well fleshed out and appears to have plenty of potential.
i)There are some quirky cut scenes to the end of campaign but nothing to fuss about. The title is a great theme park ride for fans of the second film with marvellous attention to little details. Non-fans looking for an FPS fix will find plenty of enjoyment here as well. The retro style might not be to everyone’s liking though.
j)Weapons are meaty with plenty of unlocks and modifications available. Hit detections are indicated and the overall handling and feel of your load-out feels just right.
A fair title all in all and worth a look.
