RATING (0 TO ****): ***
Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal are back in ANALYZE THAT, the sequel to their hit comedy, ANALYZE THIS. Although the laughs come regularly and often, the movie suffers from a bad case of sequelitis, and the script wanders aimlessly from joke to joke without any narrative drive and with little plot or structure.
Mobster Paul Vitti (Robert De Niro) is being released from prison into the reluctant care of his therapist, Dr. Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal). Ben tries to help Paul go legit by arranging a series of jobs for the old Mafioso. Typical of these disasters is Paul's brief time as a luxury car salesman, when he brags about a trunk's capaciousness by estimating the number of bodies it could hold.
Paul finally discovers his calling when he is asked to provide technical guidance for the "Little Caesar" television series, which features an Italian-Australian actor playing an Italian-American gangster (Anthony LaPaglia). Killing people realistically is something that Paul knows and cares about, so he throws himself into this position. Meanwhile, one of Paul's old criminal connections is trying to have him killed. But who?
Hands-down the best parts of the production are a couple of song and dance numbers that Paul attempts badly but humorously. These musical bits are from WEST SIDE STORY, and, although they certainly won't encourage De Niro to try a Broadway musical, they are hilarious.
ANALYZE THAT runs 1:35. It is rated R for "language and some sexual content" and would be acceptable for teenagers.
My son Jeffrey, age 13, gave it ***. He thought the physical comedy and dialog were both really funny.
