A drama with fairy tale elements, where an orphaned musical prodigy uses his gift as a clue to finding his birth parents.
Marguerite, South Africa. 22 April 2014
This is a musical with a modern take on the Charles Dickens tale of the hapless Oliver Twist. Like Oliver, Evan Taylor (Freddie Highmore) has grown up in an orphanage, and like Oliver, he is determined to find his long-lost parents. Whereas Oliver set off for the great metropolis of Victorian London, our modern hero sets off for New York City where he meets a young street musician named Arthur - the modern-day equivalent of Dickens's Artful Dodger. Arthur is part of a gang of young buskers, under the leadership of a strange individual who goes by the name of the Wizard (Robin Williams), and who all live in a derelict theatre - the Fillmore East - once the home of the some of the greatest musical acts of the 1960s and '70s. Like the Dickens villain Fagin, who lived off the earnings of his gang of pick-pockets, the Wizard lives off the earnings of the street musicians, and in Evan he sees a prodigious musical talent who will make him a lot of money, if he can keep him to himself. But, as in all good fairy tales, the Wizard does not have it all his own way, and there are others who recognise Evan's talent and attempt to steer him in the right direction.
Running parallel to Evan's story, is the story of his estranged musician parents (Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who are also searching for each other, but keep missing the crucial meeting points.
Eventually, the power of music triumphs in the nicest possible way. The climax is a delight!
