    Christo, Hartbeespoort. 17 July 2005

Beck Hansen stormed onto the international music scene ten years ago with the super-catchy Loser. Odelay (his most commercially successful album and the benchmark to which all his subsequent work is rated against) followed, as did the funk-infused Midnight Vultures and the bittersweet sentimental Sea Change – not one sounding like the previous. Beck’s latest album, Guero – latino slang for ‘white guy’ – has finally hit the shelves, and the only gripe is that Guero covers much of what we already. But it’s unfair to write it off simply because it doesn’t break new musical ground as Beck practically invented his own indescribable genre. It’s an awesome album with brilliant songs like E-Pro (a song reminiscent of first-generation rap-rock), Que Onda Guero (a laid-back latino-influenced track produced around a repeated guitar loop, muted mariachi horns and ambient street noises), Girl (possibly Beck’s finest pop song ever), Missing (a beautiful track with an almost lovelorn, tropical orchestra feel to it), Black Tambourine (upbeat, with deep bass strokes and tribal-like drumming), the bluesy Go It Alone (featuring Jack Black from the White Stripes), and Scarecrow (a classic road song with a shuffling tempo). Guero is extremely enjoyable and just gets better with each listen. And it just proves that the old, post-modern magic still works. A brilliant album and well worth getting!
