This Oscar winning 1944 musical is a delightful vision of beautiful girls in beautiful clothes (and some amazing hats) and bright song-and-dance numbers set to the music of Jerome Kern & Ira Gershwin (except for "Poor Johhny" in which the pseudo-cockney accents are dreadful). Rita Hayworth plays a Brooklyn nightclub singer/dancer who decides to try her luck as a model for a magazine cover. One thing leads to another and the cover girl is offered the lead in a Broadway production and an offer of marriage from theatre owner Noel Wheaton (Lee Bowman). Back home in Brooklyn, her heartbroken boyfriend (Gene Kelly) decides to close his beloved nightclub and, with his sidekick (Phil Silvers), goes off to do his patriotic duty entertaining the troops - this is WWII America and images of men in uniform abound throughout the film. Unluckily for Noel, Rusty realises that her heart belongs in Brooklyn and not on Park Avenue, and he is jlited at the altar as Rusty returns to her true-love.
It is light entertainment in the best Hollywood musical tradition, and, for the record, Miss Hayworth's singing voice is actually that of Martha Mears.
