A lawyer who has never lost a case and has almost a perfect life receives a job offer too good to be true...
Marguerite, South Africa. 22 July 2014
This film will undoubtedly offend many people, so if you are uncomfortable with nudity, sex, blasphemy, violence and profanity, read no further. Director Taylor Hackford has taken 3 classical morality tales and combined them into a modern parable set in 20th century New York. The primary source for this film is the myth of the medieval scholar Dr Faustus, who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for unlimited knowledge and power. The second source is John Milton's epic 17th century poem PARADISE LOST, which tells of Adam & Eve's temptation in the Garden of Eden and their resulting fall from grace. The final source, and the driving theme of the film, is the Classical Greek concept of Hubris (excessive pride)which always leads to the hero's downfall.
The modern Faust is an arrogant young lawyer, Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves), who is lured to New York by the promise of fame & fortune at a prestigious law firm. Viewers familiar with the Faustian myth will recognise lawyer Leman Heath (Ruben Santiago-Hudson)as the modern Mephistopheles, sent by Lucifer (Al Pacino as the senior partner John Milton),to tempt the unwary Lomax and his naive wife Mary Ann (Charlize Theron). Their decision to abandon their small-town Eden - Gainsville, Florida - is opposed by Lomax's devout mother Alice (Judith Ivey), but she cannot prevent their destruction by the cast of evil characters that they meet in their new home.
James Newton Howard provides a marvellous music score in support of the gripping plot, where pride, greed and lust reign supreme.
