If you are a horror/ Sci-Fi fan, this film is for you. It tells the story of Edward D. Wood Jnr. (Johnny Depp), a hard-drinking, cross-dresser with a passion for wearing women's clothes and a passion for writing and making horror, Sci-Fi and, eventually, pornographic films. During the 1950s, Ed Wood collected a group of odd-ball personalities to appear in his apallingly bad films, chief of whom was the aging, Hungarian-born actor Bela Lugosi, who had immortalised the role of the vampire, Count Dracula, twenty years before. Martin Landau gives a top-class Golden Globe & Oscar winning performnance in this role. Following in Lugosi's footsteps was Finnish-born actress Maila Nurmi (Lisa Marie), who created the TV persona "Vampira", and Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson (played by American wrestler George "The Animal" Steele) who was one of Wood's "monsters". Jeffrey Jones gives an elegant performance as The Amazing Criswell, a radio/TV "psychic" known for his outrageous perdictions and for his penchant for sleeping in a coffin, a habit he claimed to have acquired as a child growing up in a family of undertakers. Trying to preserve some normality in Wood's bizarre life are actress/girlfriend Dolores Fuller (Sarah Jessica Parker), who eventually made a name as a successful song-writer, and Wood's one and only wife Kathleen (Patricia Arquette) who stayed with him until his death as a result of a heart attack.
Filmed in black and white, to preserve the mood of the horror genre, so popular at the time, this film is a delight.
