One of the best media players i ever bought. It plays almost every media format there is.
Streaming content is much faster with the ethernet port than wireless (even if you're using wireless N).
Small and out of the way. Didn't do an firmware upgrade yet , since everything worked out of the box.(and the updates is small things anyways).

some things that they could make better...

Volume control. that would be nice to control it on the wdtvlive unit.
GUI. works good, but can be better.
bringing out an similar sized wdtvlive unit that has an internal hdd in it . 2.5" would be great to keep the size small.

otherwise a nice player. must buy !

Infrequent firmware updates and bugs galore have marred my experience with this player over the last year since I bought it.

Some (albeit a minority of) files won't play when they play just fine in VLC etc.

Has many issues with network connectivity. Sometimes refuses to see windows shares at all. Often disconnects from network randomly and requires power cycle.

Gets very hot in standby. Is it even actually in standby???

After recent firmware updates I can't even use the software power off without freezing the unit.

Western Digital is doing a TERRIBLE job of supporting this unit. My advice is DON"T BUY IT. =(

This thing is awesome!

I connected it to my LAN and updated the firmware. It plays everything so far.
without a problem.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT!!!

One question to the other users who have bought this, is the unit supposed to be
warm when in standby mode?

Great Buy - compact with good playback quality

The WD HD TV live does get very hot, which seems to affect its ability to decode video files (when very hot, it can choke on the very same files that it plays effortlessly when it's cooler). So, when in use, put it on its side (so that the longest side is vertical) and on top of something with holes in it. Plug it out when not in use, as standby mode makes it almost as hot as when it's actually being used.

When you want to use it, plug it back in, then switch it off and back on using the remote (this power cycling is necessary, otherwise it will time out when trying to find the shared folder on your networked device). You need to wait about 20-30 seconds between powering it down and back up via the remote, else it won't respond. Do all of this and it will work well, playing just about any audio or video files, about 95% of the time. The unhappy 5% is when playback freezes and/or when audio and video go out of synch.

The optical out on this device is a godsend for people like me who don't use the HDMI port, because it allows me to use it as a digital passthrough for audio. This means I can do the digital-to-audio conversion using a proper DAC. If you have the proper setup, in other words, the sound quality is awesome.

No complaints about video quality at all.

The bottom line is that this unit needs a fair amount of TLC, but I've been using it daily for over a year, and now that I know its quirks, it performs beautifully. I hope this helps anyone else who has hit snags with this wonderful, slightly flawed little machine.

Only took 10 minutes to set up and do firmware upgrade. Wifi works flawlessly with Netgear usb dongle. Streams all my movies, music and photos from my PC without any problems. Recommended.

Excellent product! I've had no troubles with overheating or anything funny. Plays everything my popcorn hour does! Works well with both the popcorn hour (that I've got to 2 tb hard drives in - reads them on normal Samba) as well as my PC as a digital media server.

Used the old WD TV HD and this is slightly better because of the network connectivity. I want to get myself a NAS soon to stream movies properly around the house (the Popcorn hour starts sweating heavily when you're torrenting, watching and streaming HD) and I don't foresee any troubles with this device.

I did update the players firmware and it was a dream.
