I've had the pleasure of owning this unit for over a month now. The hype around this player is completely justified. It is the best budget player out now.
It is rare for something so cheap to equal or outperform players costing many times its price. I confirmed this by having other players on hand to test. The HDMI output is crystal clear and very lifelike with rich and vibrant colours. The upscaling of standard def is in a class of its own at this price, it puts something like a PS3 to shame.
Its audio performance stays consistently brilliant no matter what your configuration. For example, if you choose to use the older coaxial digital output and limit the audio output to standard def Dolby Digital/DTS, the sound quality is still excellent and breaths new life into older generation equipment. Even PCM Stereo sounds very good, which tells me the digital processor handling tasks such as downmixing works very well.
The Component Video output is also of very high quality. If your screen is only capable of 720P (HD Ready) then you may actually prefer the component video over HDMI. It is that good. Retail DVD's with copy protection will not be upscaled on this output however.
Other surprises include almost flawless playback of computer encoded files including divx, mp4 and mkv. You can plug your large external hard drive straight into the USB port and have your whole library available for playback. It will even play DVD VTS files.
Extremely fast blu-ray disc loading and regular, painless firmware updates round off this excellent player.

It is a great product, pity only that the proprietary Sony wi-fi dongle almost costs the same as the player!
