This sumptuously costumed 6 part TV miniseries, set in 19th century India, is basaed on M. M. Kaye's novel of the same name, and tells the story of Ashton (Ash) Pelham-Martyn (Ben Cross), an orphan who is raised by his Indian wet-nurse. At the age of 11, Ash learns the truth about his English parentage and, like Rudyard Kipling's hero Kim, is sent to England to be educated as a gentleman and then inducted into the British Indian Army and used as a spy. When Ash is selected to escort a wedding caravan to the Rana of Bithor's kingdom, he is reunited with his childhood playmate, the half-caste princess Anjuli (Amy Irving) and falls in love with her. Anjuli and her half-sister Shushila (Sneh Gupta)have been promised in marriage to the elderly Rana (Rossano Brazzi). The wedding caravan also includes Ash's honourary father Koda Dad (Omar Sharif), the princesses' uncle Kaka-ji Rao (Christopher Lee), their precocious younger brother Prince Jhoti (Shayur Mehta) and the arch-villain Biju Ram (Saeed Jaffrey). There are thrills and spills along the way, and on his return to active duty, Ash is sucked into the Second Afghan War and the disastrous siege at Kabul. It all makes for great entertainment and his eventual reunion with Anjuli provides a nail-biting climax.
