As a gamer with an interest in DJing and everything involved in mixing, DJ Hero seemed a logical choice over the latest Guitar Hero.

DJ Hero consists of several difficulty settings ranging from their mind-numbingly easy beginners mode to their brain-destroying insanely difficult expert mode. Either way, it's easy enough to pick up and play for the first time without too much effort. If you're a veteran of the Guitar Hero series then DJ Hero's basic gameplay mechanics will come quite naturally to you and you'll likely want to jump straight to Medium difficulty.

There's an easy to follow tutorial built in that teaches you every DJing skill you'll need, to get through the game, and from there you'll play sets of 4 or 5 or more songs at a time, earning "stars" for your performance of each song, all of which are automatically redeemed into unlocks of various new items such as new decks and headphones for your character, and even new venues to play at.

DJ Hero will make a great party game and if you have a Guitar hero controller, you can actually simultaneously co-op a track using both the guitar and turntable for a sound that sounds just like some popular bands.

The turntable controller feels solid and of a high build quality. The controller has a modular design allowing the mixer portion to be attached to either the left or right side of the turntable, making it comfortable for both left- and right-handed players. The deck/turntable contains three buttons, two (green and blue) for each of the two songs you'll be mixing, and a third red button inbetween the first two, for adding sound effects. The crossfader also feels solid and unlikely to disintegrate anytime soon, which is good because you'll use it extensively. Above the crossfader is an effects knob (to the right) and the "Euphoria" button to the left, which lights up red when euphoria is available to use and is basically the DJ Hero equivalent of Guitar Hero's whammy bar. Concealed under a cover on the mixer side are the standard buttons and joystick controller found on a regular xbox controller, which allows you to navigate around the in-game menus. Quite nifty.

In terms of my personal experience and opinion of the game, I've found that DJ Hero wasn't able to hold my attention for quite as long as the Guitar Hero games because I personally found the gameplay of DJ Hero, very repetitive. Whereas I was able to play Guitar Hero without getting bored for hours, the most I've managed with DJ Hero is about 2 hours before growing bored of the repetition of making the same sounds over and over again and switching it off. Of course, not everyone is the same so read a few reviews online before making your decision to buy this one.

On the technical side, I was very disappointed with what I perceived to be a poor level of graphic detail in the game, with shoddy colouring and poor textures, and though that may just be my PC-gaming side rearing its head, I really do feel that DJ Hero's graphics are well below par and belong on a PS2, not an xbox or any other new generation console. I've thus given it a low graphics score.

Sound-wise the tracks available for mixing are interesting. It's unlikely that every gamer will love every individual song in the game, but that being said, the mixes produced by the individual tracks in the game are very interesting and often a real joy to play. I often found myself jiving along as I was Djing up a virtual frenzy.

In conclusion, shoddy graphics and somewhat repetitive gameplay let down an otherwise unique, fresh and entertaining gaming experience.
