This beautifully crafted film, fully deserves its Golden Globe nominations for Best Drama and Best director. The film explores the relationships between man and animall man and woman, and parent and child.
Tom Booker (Robert Redford)is a "horse whisperer" - a man credited with having a special empathy with difficult or damaged horses. Annie Maclean (Kristin Scott Thomas) is a New York magazine editor whose daughter Grace (Scarlett Johansson) has been involved in a harrowing riding accident involving a friend and their two horses. Annie brings Grace and the traumatised animal to the Booker ranch in a desperate attempt to heal the physical and emotional wounds that both have suffered. For Tom, this is no easy task - obviously suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, but unable to verbalise her feelings, Grace is a thoroughly obnoxious child. The contrast between the Macleans' city sophistication and the Bookers' down-to-earth farming lifestyle is played out in the initial tension between Annie and Tom, and Annie and Tom's sister-in-law Dianne (Dianne Wiest). The arrival of Robert Maclean (Sam Neill)introduces a new element of tension into the story. How to resolve the issue of the growing attraction between Tom and Annie, and Grace's growing dependence on Tom, prrovides the climax to a superb film.
