This 3 part miniseries is visually superb. Cinematographer Christopher Titus King exnibits a gift for filming the most beautiful natural scenery to recreate the paintings of Impressionists Claude Monet, Pierre-August Renoir and Paul Cezanne. His use of lighting and colour is breathtaking. One could almost ignore the actors and just focus on their paintings and the cinematography. Nevertheless, it is the actors who must bring the story to life and this they do admirably. As always, The BBC has assembled a strong cast to portray the painters and their wives and mistresses, with Julian Glover in the prime role of the aged Monet, recalling his earlier life as a struggling artist (potrayed by Richard Armitage) and the friendships and rivalries of Renoir (Charlie Condou), Cezanne (Will Keen), Frederic Bazille (James Lance), Edouard Manet (Andrew Havill) and Edgar Degas (Aden Gillett). This is a must-see for all art lovers.
