Matthew MacFadyen stars in this tense drama, based on the novel by Maurice Gee. Paul Prior (MacFadyen) is an internationally respected war photographer who returns to his small New Zealand home town after the death of his father. His estranged brother Andrew (Colin Moy) is shocked to see him, and despite their differences, Paul agrees to remain behind to help sort out the sale of their father's estate. Looking around the broken-down estate, Paul comes across 16-year-old Celia (Emily Barclay), an aspiring writer. Paul is unaware that Celia is in fact his daughter, from a teenage relationship with local woman Jackie (Jodie Rimmer) and when he takes up a temporary position teaching journalism at the school, he finds that Celia is one of his pupils. Despite the disapproval of Jackie and Andrew, and of the community at large, the unwitting pair meet regularly and begin to form a strong emotional bond. When Celia goes missing, suspicion instantly falls on Paul, and as the truth begins to dawn on him, he is forced to confont the family tragedies and betrayals that he ran away from as a youth.
