Grieving widower Garret Blake builds boats for a living. Rebuilding his life - that's another matter. But that's before Theresa Osborne comes to his North Carolina village. Theresa, a lonely divorcee and researcher for the Chicago Tribune, knows Garret is the author of the message she found inside a bottle on a Cape Cod beach. And she knows the message spoke to her in a way that profoundly touched her heart. Kevin Costner as Garret and Robin Wright Penn as Theresa bring high-voltage starpower to 'Message In A Bottle', a tale of love lost and found. "You choose - the past or the future. Pick one and stick with it," Garret's spry father Dodge (Paul Newman) advises. The advice sticks. So does the impact of this tender, movingly filmed tale.

For a romantic drama, the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack for Message in a Bottle is perhaps not as frantic as one would expect from an action title. There isn’t a single gunshot or explosion. Still the beautiful score by composer Gabriel Yared, who also did the score for the Oscar winning The English Patient, comes across in such a powerful way that it greatly enriches the whole movie. One standout musical moment was the love scene between Kevin Costner and Robin Wright Penn. The music has a very low bass sound to it and sounds excellent, as do all the other musical interludes. The movie also has rich and detailed sounds of rain falling, thunder crashing and yachts plowing through the ocean. The dialogue was always clear and easy to follow. The surrounds are used quite frequently and helps bring the movie to life.
The overall picture quality of Message in a Bottle is superb. The director Luis Mandoki made sure that he hired one of the best Cinematographers in the business, Caleb Deschanel. Some of the well known movies Caleb Deschanel has also worked on previously includes The Black Stallion and The Right Stuff. Message in a Bottle has large amounts of outdoor scenery stunningly photographed and beautifully lit. We also get to see numerous water related scenes. Sometimes at night, then at dusk, then with yachts sailing through the seas of the coast where the movie is set. There are some scenes with the slightest hint of edge correction on them, but these are mercifully few and far between. Overall though the Message in a Bottle DVD manages to accurately portray all of the visual splendour of the movie into our living rooms. The village where the movie was shot looks like the perfect place for anyone wanting to retire by the sea.
Message in a Bottle has a Directors commentary which helps one gain more insight behind the processes involved in making the movie. There is also Directors commentary on the three deleted scences which are included on the disk. All in all there are enough extra's on the disk to interest most movie buffs.
The DVD's menus use stills from the movie and are simple and easy to use. The DVD comes in the standard Warner clip case. Though I found Message in a Bottle slow going at times, the high production values of the movie shone through cleary on the DVD and managed to keep me focussed on the movie. I would recommend Message in a Bottle to all lovers of Romantic movies as well as those of you interested in Directors commentaries.
