History is written by the winners, and this documentary proves it.

It attempts to chart the epic battle for TV ratings that ensued between the WWE and WCW for what would become the premier Monday night slot. And it is a WWE production, so check all expectations of neutrality at the door, please. Oh, the factual content is decent enough. It's just the spin put on some of the facts that sour the production. Take Gene Okerlund for instance, who jumped ship to WCW and returned when WCW was absorbed by WWE. He comes across as too apologetic during his screen time, as though he feels his further employment at WWE depends on what he says. The same goes for the long-time WWE stalwarts who could just as well be Vince MacMahon's cheering section.

The real meat of this production comes from Eric Bischoff, who provides a frank and unrepentant account of the how WCW Nitro started and of the often underhanded tactics he employed to build and sustain the brand as a genuine contender. By contrast we have Vince MacMahon portraying himself as an innocent victim during this period, always on the back foot and always forced by Bischoff to resort to tactics he ordinarily would never have even considered. I daresay that anyone who buys that is still under the man's employ.

This could have been so much better. There was scope for much insight, beyond merely what was shown on tv. Sadly, a lot of the interviewees let their bitterness get in the way and resort to mudslinging against a promotion which was long dead at the time anyway. Or maybe it is that bitterness that got them selected to provide input, so that the WWE could spit on the corpse of its fallen foe.

Whatever, it is a wasted opportunity.
