Description

The new single "It's Like That," is now #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, #12 on the Rhythm chart and #19 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart with over 52 million in audience this week. The song was #1 most-added at pop and urban radio in its first week, with over 200 stations combined, including major U.S. markets New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington DC, St. Louis, Miami, Detroit and Denver.

The music video for "It's Like That" was shot by Hollywood A-list director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon). Ratner last worked with Mariah in 1999 on the #1 Pop/ #1 R&B "Heartbreaker" clip.

The new album finds Mariah's broad range of musical talents on full display, as every one of its 14 songs bears her signature as writer and co-producer. Carey continues to work with today's top R&B and hip-hop producers, such as the Neptunes, who lend their signature production style to two tracks: "To The Floor" (featuring Nelly) and "Say Somethin'" (featuring Snoop Dogg). The album's other featured guest is Twista, who shows up on "One and Only." The first single, "It's Like That," is one of four songs co-produced by Mariah and Jermaine Dupri, along with "Get Your Number," "Shake It Off," and "We Belong Together." Fellow Def Jam artist Kanye West collaborates with Mariah on "Stay the Night." On other tracks she works with Scram Jones ("Your Girl"), Mahogany ("When I Feel It") and James Poyser ("Mine Again"). Three tracks are co-written and co-produced by Mariah and James "Big Jim" Wright (of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis' Flyte Tyme Productions), including "I Wish You Knew," "Circles," and "Fly Like a Bird."

Mariah Carey is an award-winning megastar who holds the title of #1 Female Artist of the '90s - the only artist to have topped the charts in each year of that decade. With cumulative total sales of her albums, singles and long-form videos in excess of 75-times platinum in the U.S. and over 150 million in sales worldwide, she is simply the top-selling female artist in history. With a record 15 #1 singles, two Grammy Awards, eight American Music Awards, Billboard magazine's Artist of the Decade Award, and the World Music Award as World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium - Mariah Carey's ongoing career remains an unparalleled success story in the history of contemporary popular music.

Product Reviews (1)

Christo, Hartbeespoort. 17 July 2005

Much can be said about Mariah Carey, an artist who at one stage appeared unable to do anything wrong: she topped the charts in each year of the decade known as the nineties, has world-wide album sales exceeding the 150-million mark, a record 15 number-one singles, two Grammy Awards and eight American Music Awards to name a few. But she also had a box-office disaster called Glitter, and decidedly horrific album to accompany the movie, and a very public breakdown. Her next album, Charmbracelet, wasn’t as bad as Glitter, but was unfortunately also not very well received either. It is therefore understandable that everyone has been very anxious to see whether her new album would signal the return of The Voice. And to some extent, The Emancipation of Mimi does. It entered the US charts at number one, with first-week sales of 404 000, making Mimi Mariah’s best first-week performance ever. The Emancipation of Mimi features 14 tracks that Mariah co-wrote and co-produced, and is her first album on new label Def Jam.

Everyone who is anyone in R&B and Hip-Hop makes an appearance – some not bad (like Twista and Snoop Dogg rapping), some just plain awful (mostly Jermaine Dupri, who manages to ruin many songs with his rapping and singing, but with his irritating voice in general) – and includes big-shot producers like The Neptunes and Kanye West as well. Besides the first single, It’s Like That, some of my other favourite tracks include the second single, We belong Together, Shake it Off, Say Somethin’ featuring Snoop Dogg, Get Your Number (that uses a clever sample of Imagination’s 80’s-hit Just An Illusion, but unfortunately includes Jermaine Dupri as well), Circles, and Fly Like A Bird. The problem with Mariah Carey though isn’t the music: the voice is still there, and the hit-making writers and producers ensure that the songs are great. The problem is that she tries too hard to please her old fans and new fans, forgetting that sometimes you just can’t make old-school R&B work with cutting-edge hip-hop. Is Mimi a bad album? No – it is in fact one of her best albums in years. It has a good mix of Beyoncé-like funk, stripped-down ballads and 70’s influenced R&B, and I think it will leave most fans very satisfied. The question remains though: is this really the return of The Voice? I believe it is.
