N.F.O.H can rightly claim the mantle of the first and most influential of the ‘alternative/goth bands’, for years they stood alone as the spokespersons for disillusioned white youth tired of the pop fodder dished out by radio. Fiercely independent, the band’s uncompromising stand led to clashes with both the mainstream media and the record companies. Championed from the beginning by 5FM’s Barney Simon, NO FRIENDS OF HARRY ruled the country’s alternative scene from their formation in 1986 and consistently produced albums filled with intense and often brooding songs. Not that ‘hits’ eluded them however , as despite little support from the pop stations of the day they managed to charts several tracks including “Competition Rules”; ”Present Has Passed” and their riveting version of the Stones classic “Paint it Black”. Far more stylish than the earlier punk movement, with darkly passionate music and a moody intense aura the band were one of the biggest live drawcards of the day. In 1990 N.F.O.H pulled off a stunt which even had their numerous critics in the mainstream music industry shaking their heads in disbelief when they, with no publicity, slipped into the UK. In the next three months they played at some of the hottest nightclubs in London including the legendary Marquee and the Rock Garden to critical acclaim. Later in the decade they teamed up with UK producer and frontman for The Mission, Wayne Hussey who arranged and produced several tracks for the band. The band called it quits at the end of the decade but as this Retro compilation “THE PRESENT HAS PASSED” shows the band will always have a place in the annals of South African rock history. k
