After a young, middle class couple moves into a suburban 'starter' tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

Switch off the lights, turn the sound up and be prepared for some hair-raising moments or, you could not be phased by this garbage. I for one was skeptical as I'm rarely interested in these "Blair Witch" clones and mostly I get a headache from the camera. At first I didn't bite onto Paranormal Activity, it starts off slow, very low budget, first time actors with hardly no script at all, prancing through their daily chores etc. I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to wait 60 minutes listening to all the nonsense before things start to happen. Luckily it is revealed early on that this entity has already been making appearances and the camera was bought to try and find out a pattern or capture the entity on camera whilst they are asleep. 20 minutes into the film and things start to progress very quickly. I liked the approach the couple make at times, other times it borders on stupidity but the good stuff (i.e. when things happen at night) manages to scare the living sh*t out of you. What works in the film's favour is the lack of music and excellent sound effects, you can't help but imagine yourself in that instance and your armhair is bound to stand up straight in at least one or two scenes. I realised early that if I'm not going bite onto the "true story" approach then I'll laugh everything off but this was not the case. I didn't bite yet I was engrossed most of the time.
When the film started showing in cinemas abroad there were reports of multiple walkouts. In a cinema I don't find it hard to believe but here in SA nothing scares us easily so I'm kind of bummed I never went to watch it on cinema. It's also been claimed (think it might be fact) that the film has been the most profitable in film history, made with $15 000 and earning over 100 million in the US alone. Of course the entire "true story" approach is complete bullsh*t and the fact that Hollywood is already developing a sequel is more proof. For that, I applaud the filmmaker with his success.
P.S: The dvd has an alternate ending which I thought was better but might not have worked so well with the "true story" approach.

While some people found the Paranormal Activity series of movies to be kinda boring, I loved them. THis 1 was my favourite.
