Maggie Smith is brilliant as usual. Great cast. A keeper.

This is another superb piece of British ensemble casting. Directed by American actor Dustin Hoffman and set in an elegant English retirement home for musicians and singers, the film features some of the great names of the British music world, who play the residents. Integrated into this wonderful cast are the familiar faces of Golden Globe nominee Maggie Smith as Jean Horton, an operatic diva who has fallen on hard times, Tom Cortenay as her ex-husband Reggie Paget, comedian Billy Connolly as Reggie's womanising best friend Wilf Bond, and Pauline Collins as Cissy Robson, a dowdy little spinster suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Michael Gambon is delightful as the flamboyant musical director Cedric Livingstone and real-life opera singer Dame Gwyneth Jones plays Jean Horton's rival, Anne Langley. All these marvellous characters (and many others) combine their talents to present a musical gala to raise funds for their home. Behind the scenes there are tears and tantrums, squabbles and rivalries, as a house full of fading egos comes to life through Ronald Harwood's feisty dialogue and Dario Marianelli's masterful music score.
If you enjoyed THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL you will be enchanted by this film.
