Werner Herzog follows 'The Grizzly Man' with this true life drama. Christian Bale once again leads the movie and doesn't disappoint. It's a inspiring story and is perfect for the lazy Sunday afternoon. Herzog does a wonderful job with the camera and the cinematography was beautiful. The story was progressive at all times and I kinda felt sorry for these guys caught up in the P.O.W camp.
On the flipside though, I have to complain about some things. Firstly, this really is a drama, the trailer doesn't present the film as it is imo. It's not really adventurous, there's no real action and what's there is really simple and just plain forward. It doesn't make the movie bad in any way it just doesn't give it that little bit of extra investment one would like to have in the film. At a certain stage in the film the group of P.O.W's split up and although the one group is shown at a later stage, it's never explained what happened with them. I didn't like that because I sorta wanted to know because the one character played a big part throughout the film (Jeremy Davis, E.T; Legends of the Fall). I'm not sure what Herzog was aiming for here, he's telling a great story and he does it very well, it just seemed very predictable, very average with great drama and performances. It felt very safe and I never for one second felt worried about the captors...they really weren't meanicing at all.
Overall, a good Sunday watch
