Marguerite, South Africa. 3 April 2014

For lovers of swashbuckling, historical adventure, this collection of 6 mini-TV series is a must. Beautifully filmed and costumed, the BBC has triumphed in another of its excellent productions.
Richrd E.Grant is the epitome of English elegance as the foppish Sir Percy Blakeney alias the Scarlet Pimpernel, aided and abetted by Elizabeth McGovern as his French wife Marguerite.
Across the Channel in France, these two intrepid rescuers of victims of the Reign of Terror are opposed by two fine actors, Ronan Vipert and Martin Shaw as the megalomaniac Maximilien Robespierre and his sidekick, Chauvelin. This quartet heads a variety characters in the first three mini-series, THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, VALENTINE GAUTIER and A KING'S RANSOM, all filmed in 1998.
In the second set of three mini-series, ENNUI, FRIENDS & ENEMIES, and A GOOD NAME, filmed in 2000, the cast changes with the Pimpernel now assisted by John McEnery as his sidekick, Sir William, and Robespierre working his way through a series of inept assistants, headed by JIm Carter of Downton Abbey fame.
Exciting and well-scripted, with a dash of spicy humour to lighten the drama, this series is well worth the money.
