As a guy who is very much in the IT industry, I can without a doubt recommend this and any other Synology NAS!!
These devices are brilliant for the experts and novices alike as the OS (DISK STATION MANAGER) is very easy to setup.
It does Windows File Services (Windows Shares), MAC File Services (MAC Shares) and NFS (Linux Shares)
and they all work brilliantly. It has direct support for MAC Time Machine backups as well.
The package center allows you to install many other applications (Synology and 3rd Party) to do a host of things directly from the NAS. Namely Download Station which allows you to download torrents, and news feeds (NZB's) directly on the NAS and it supports RSS Feeds for auto downloading.
You can install Plex media server, Couch potato and many other useful apps from 3rd parties.
The synology DS Video, DS Music, DS Photo are pretty self explanatory but also allow you to access those services directly over the internet. Even if you are not tech savi, Synology quick connect will give you direct access into your NAS box over the internet via synology. There are no limits to what is possible with this NAS system. Synology DSM has been rated one of top NAS OS's out there (if not the best!). It is based on a Linux backend as well so the real tech savi guys out there will have loads of fun with this system as well.
I have run the Synology as my NAS backend for my entire house for over 2 years now and its just brilliant. KODI on my Amazon Fire TV's and Raspberry Pi 3's run flawlessly. If connected via Gig network you will get excellent copy speeds to and from the device, maxing out the gig link in both directions (read and write speeds are over 100mb/s over a Gig network)
