This sits at the same table of great French-made action movies as District 13 and The Transporter. The pacing is perfect: fast but also with pauses to catch its breath before hitting you with the next action setpiece. The story is efficient in setting up the action scenes while also giving lead actor Liam Neeson a chance to flex his acting range. In fact all the actors convince in their roles, even Famke Janssen who could so easily have overacted her part as the ex-wife and portray a soap opera cariciature. There are some moments that the viewer must be willing to overlook, like the goon at the airport who can break Usain Bolt's 100m world record running uphill and with broken ribs. But the main selling point here is Liam Neeson's character raising hell in Paris. The action scenes are a delight to watch. They're a fine balance of fluid and frenetic, brutal and lucid, with not a hint of cartooniness to them.
On blu-ray the movie is a treat. Picture quality highlights exceptional black levels which come in very handy during the bits of the film set at night. Daytime scenes highlight supreme colour detail and fleshtones. Sound is every bit as frenetic yet composed as the action scenes they describe, and also very adept at handling the ambience of the quieter moments.
Great movie, great blu-ray.
