The doubters have to listen to this former member of the multiple- gold and award winners, Boom Shaka, THEO’s debut solo album NGIYABONGA and they will understand that it is not exaggeration that when the history of Afro music is written in future, Theo Hlengethwa’s name will prominently feature. With the help of the Mothiba twin brothers (Revolution) this well brewed and carefully produced album is set to take the standard of afro pop music to higher level and he will soon be a much sort after musician of the genre at most shows and festivals. Theo hails from the eastern township of Johannesburg, Springs is no newcomer in this competitive industry, he shot into prominence as member of Boom Shaka in the eighties during where he learned the ropes. His music is mindful of quality, something many artists fail to do. The music of the album, Ngiybonga is for the soul; it is catchy, powerful and has a lot of sing along choruses which are highlighting Theo’s truly beautiful voice that is bound to linger in one’s conscious for a long time. His twelve track album can best be described as afro pop mixed with some African rhythms, kwaito and house tunes with influences of some of South African mega groups such as Mafikizolo, Bongo Muffin and legends like Oliver Mtukudzi. A truly cross over album with style that touches young, old, rural and urban audience with plug tracks like “Never Let You Down”, “Ngiyabonga” etc.
