Over the course of two albums, Umanji has grown to become one of the country's most respected singer and songwriters, amassing a devoted fanbase throughout the sub-continent and beyond. Now, mid-2003, comes NDLALA - Umanji's third album after MOLOI/THE WITCH (1999) and WANTOLOBELA (2001) and an offering that surely marks out this artist as one of the most exciting talents working in roots music today. The album - whose title means "hunger for food" - is full-bodied and invitingly warm, enriched by melodies that are authentic and worldclass and are complemented by Umanji's distinctive acoustic guitar playing. NDLALA - which was produced by Umanji and Penwell Kunene (also responsible for MOLOI) - also brings Umanji's amazing voice into centrestage, showcasing why he's likened to premier world music artists like Salif Keita and Baaba Maal but at the same time, ensuring this singer stands out as completely unique. NDLALA is jam-packed with memorable songs - tracks like "Ndala", "Meleko" and "nWama Willi" are joys to listen to, moving forward with an irresistible energy and remaining stuck in your head for days after. Umanji earned a nomination for Best Newcomer in the 2000 South African Music Awards - and there is no doubt that the quality of performing, songwriting and producing on NDLALA is likely to ensure Umanji's name is amongst the nominees at next year's event. The singer's belief in intensive touring (both grassroots and high profile) will also add to Umanji's profile, which keeps growing with each release from this outstanding artist.
