I bought this at an absolute steal while it was on sale. It arrived next day in the biggest box I've ever seen. Assembly was quick and painless.
The 57 cm Weber Smokey Mountain cooker is huge. The two cooking grates will allow you to cook a ridiculous amount of food. I was able to lay 4 slabs of ribs flat on the bottom grate without rolling the ends or touching the sides of the cooker. Using a rib rack would almost double that capacity and still leave space on the grate for something else. At the top I had a 1.5 kg pork loin roast and a drip pan filled with 16 chicken thighs in a honey-mustard sauce, but I could have fit a lot more meat in if I had any. I think you should be able to cook eight to ten whole chickens or a couple of turkeys at once. Everything was melt-in-the-mouth, finger-licking, lip-smackingly delicious!
Using a smoker like this is a big departure from the typical South African braai. It's certainly not quick, but it is very rewarding. The slow, relaxed cooking pace affords you a lot of time to chill, so more time for beer! I've used my trusted Weber kettle braai before for really long smokes of about 12 hours, but it's a lot of work to keep the temperature down to between 100 and 125 degrees celsius. The Smokey Mountain cooker makes it super easy. It maintains a very constant temperature without all the fiddling and constant adjustments.
Build quality is superb. The Smokey Mountain feels solid and the sheer bulk of it is almost intimidating. Despite the size, it's very easy to move around if you do it in sections. The only let down is the aluminium side panel that feels cheap and flimsy in contrast to the rest of the smoker. There is a plus to this however, as it is really light and easy to remove with one hand when you need to add wood, charcoal or water.
Due to the size of the 57 cm model, it could use a lot of briquettes per cook. That's easy to offset by just filling it up and cooking for the week or month ahead! Overall a very serious piece of kit. I can't wait for the weekend to fire it up again.
