This is the most violent of the DC animated features to be released, despite some of its violence being toned down. The story revolves around the origin of Wonder Woman and her introduction to the outside world, away from the seclusion of her Amazon paradise. Director Lauren Montgomery, who includes several memorable episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender as part of the CV, goes all out here to provide a mature storyline coupled with many brutal fights. And it works well: the fights do not overwhelm the story (which covers much ground in its 70-odd minute running time), nor does the storytelling slow down the proceedings.
The only negative I can think of is the final battle, the epic encounter between the Amazons and the demons. It has to do with the MPAA originally passing this feature with an R-rating, saying that some of the more violent (Did I mention that this is a violent feature?) moments would have to be excised for it to comply with the PG-13 rating. So they excised the more questionable bits and as a result the final showdown feels lopsided and disjointed with uneven pacing throughout. DC should have stuck to its guns and released Wonder Woman with the R-rating; that would have been cool. As it stands though, this is one of their upper-tier titles. Highly recommended.
