Vin Diesel stars as Xander "xXx" Cage, a notorious underground thrill-seeker who, until now, has been deemed untouchable by the law. But when NSA Agent Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) wants to infiltrate a Russian crime ring, he knows there's only one man for the job. He makes a deal with xXx, offering him freedom from prosecution if he'll use his extreme athletic skills and attitude to go undercover.

What to you get when you combine one of the hottest rising action stars with the baddest mother out there and a director who knows how to portray action? Why Triple X of course.

Triple X is the American’s attempt at creating a their own equivalent of Britain’s top secret agent, James Bond 007, but without all the sophisticated social refinements. Vin Diesel plays Xander Cage, a hot shot daredevil will lives and breathes for danger and has no respect at all for authority figures or the government. These are not the most likely set of traits one would imagine for delicate spy work, but the NSA is forced to look for alternative style new recruitments as their other agents keep ending up dead as they try to infiltrate a shadowy organization called Anarchy 99 in Prague.

The movie opens with Xander doing an amazing stunt, of an expensive sports car being driven of a very high bridge with him still in the car, then getting out and parachuting to safety leaving the state police who were chasing him twiddling their thumbs in frustration. But NSA Agent Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) has plans for Xander and arranges to kidnap him and put him through a series of tests to see if he and some others he has kidnapped might match the profile of the recruit they can send into Anarchy 99. This leads of a superb action scene of low flying helicopters and Xander doing all sorts of incredibly cool stunts on a off road motorbike while tracer bullets are flying at him and explosions are going off all over the place. This sequence is amazingly well done, and for me the second best in the movie. The best stunt sequence in the movie though must be the snowboarding section with Xander deliberately setting of an avalanche. He then has try to evade the mountain of snow that threatens to overwhelm him. Think SSX with with snow chasing you and you’ll get the idea. This scene is exhilarating and is sure to get your adrenaline pumping. I would recommend going to see the movie for this alone.

Triple X isn’t perfect. Sure there are a number references to James Bond, making it clear were the movie is coming from. There is the gadget guy, the over the top high tech weapons and surveillance equipment. Also included are references to having a license to kill and the willing beautiful women to be had at ever turn. But what makes the movie work though is Vin Diesel’s hard core on screen character. He looks and sounds like someone who has no fear of dying and who will jump of the highest buildings just because someone said he couldn’t. Samuel L. Jackson’s with his usual I’m in charge and no-one should try mess with me role as Xander’s boss works perfectly. One couldn’t imagine Vin Diesel willing to take orders from anyone other than Samuel L. Jackson. The movie btw has an excellent hard rock sound track to perfectly match the on screen events.

I did think the middle part of the movie dragged a bit before taking off again, and the final mini-sub sequence did not work too well taken in context of the whole movie. As I mentioned before both the motorbike and skateboarding sequences are show stoppers, so the mini-sub sequence does not come even close to comparing to them. I also think the girl he falls for is not that great looking and what is up with the ugly woolen coat he wears for most of the movie? Still I guess one shouldn’t gripe too much. At least with Triple X we have an excellent action movie to watch and even more too look forward to. I see the next XXX2 is already scheduled for 2004. Oh before forget, you shouldn’t miss the end title CGI sequences. They are probably the best end title sequences I’ve yet seen in a movie. I can only think that they were created as the intro titles, but for some reason were shifted to the end of the movie. Recommended for all action junkies.

    XXX
A film review by Steve Rhodes

XXX, as my wife so aptly put it, is "James Bond on Speed." An outrageously over-the-top action picture, it reunites THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS's hunk of a star, Vin Diesel, with its never-a-subtle-moment director, Rob Cohen. It's a fine line, but this popcorn flick is so bad that it's hilariously good. One suspects, however, that you won't have nearly as much fun as the movie's stunt men and pyrotechnic crew, who clearly had a blast, creating some truly amazing sequences with everything from motorbikes to snowboards.

The setup has NSA Agent Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) recruiting "the best and the brightest of the bottom of the barrel" for a super secret operation. He arrests Xander "XXX" Cage (Vin Diesel), a rock star of a criminal, whose antics appear on web cams around the world. Video game companies want to shower money on him in order to make a game about his exploits and crimes, but he refuses to sell out. After some tests under fire for XXX, Gibbons forces him to go to Prague on a mission for the government.

Once in Eastern Europe, XXX, armed with a Bond-like gaggle of gadgets, meets some Russian anarchists who have a scheme to kill millions and provoke World War III in the process. These villains, lead by Yorgi (Marton Csokas), have some redeeming qualities. Dressed in retro rave gothic, they throw some great parties. XXX easily blends in with them since one of his mottoes is, "I like anything fast enough to do something stupid with." (The dialog is a hoot.)

Yelena (Asia Argento), called "cold, intelligent and vicious," is Yorgi's girlfriend. No matter how many times she tells XXX to go away, you know that they'll soon be an item.

XXX isn't the sort of movie to be analyzed. Grab your popcorn and get ready to laugh. This is one fun flick that turns its stupidity to its advantage. And it's a real adrenaline rush.

XXX runs 1:52. It is rated PG-13 for "violence, non-stop action sequences, sensuality, drug content and language" and would be acceptable for kids around 11 and up.

My son Jeffrey, age 13, gave it ***, saying that it was funny and outrageous and that the stunts were really cool. His friend Kyle, also 13, said it was awesome and gave it ****.
