As great as Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong were, there was something they lacked that put them just short of the best efforts of Jackie Chan like Police Story and Miracles: a sense of humanity. By comparison to these older classics, the more recent Thai features came across as protracted slugfests. Here though, director Prachya Pinkaew has made a martial arts spectacle featuring a genuinely sympathetic main character. Much of the beginning is dedicated to explaining her origin and circumstances. Thus our sympathy for her is established, our genuine desire to see her overcome her obstacles. And overcome them she does, with some of the greatest displays of martial artistry committed to film. Nothing has been sacrificed for the greater emphasis on story; if anything the fights are even better than those of its forebears. Witness the multi-storey epic at the end and pray that the director’s creative juices never run dry.
