For a really good crime / spy / suspense story to work, the plot needs to be suffieciently complicated to keep one guessing all the time, and the climax, when all is revealed, should be the highlight of the film. This film fits the bill perfectly. I have to admit that I was very confused the first time I watched it, I had to map the time frame and the characters the second time I watched it, and I only REALLY enjoyed it the third time, because then I could appreciate the clever dialogue and character interplay without losing track of the very convoluted story.
Julia Roberts gives a Goilden Globe nominated performance as Claire Stenwick, a former CIA operative turned crook cum corporate spy. Her former rival, now her partner, is a former MI6 agent, Ray Koval, played by Clive Owen. Together these two plan to steal the formula for a multi-million dollar product from one company, owned by Howard Tully (Tom Wilkinson), pretend to sell it to another company owned by Dick Garsik (Paul Giamatti), but sell it to a third (unnamed) bidder in Switzerland. Do they succeeed? You will have to follow the international trail of subterfuge to find out. Keep your wits about you and you will not be disappointed.
