This 1998 made-for-TV film is just over 3 hours long, so set aside an entire afternoon or evening for viewing. Based on the Victorian era novel by Thomas Hardy,it tells the tale of a rather wilful young girl, Bathsheba Everdene (Paloma Baez), trying to maintain her independence in a society where such behaviour is viewed with suspicion. Ironically, this desire for independance leads her into a very complicated love situation involving three men, all of whom suffer as a result of their infatuation with her. Shepherd-turned-farmer Gabriel Oak (Nathaniel Parker) is a man whose financial vicissitudes mirror those of his love-life. Gentleman farmer William Boldwood (Nigel Terry)is a confirmed bachelor who, because of a Valentine's Day prank, convinces himself that he is in love with Bathsheba. Sgt. Frank Troy (Jonathan Firth)is a man whose pride and wilfulness match Bathsheba's and who, as a result, causes great unhappiness to everyone around him. Which of them will stay the course?
The supporting cast is peopled with the common folk that Hardy loved to portray, and who are carefully costumed by Nic Ede and brought to life by the BAFTA-winning cinematography of John Daly.
