Christo, Hartbeespoort. 17 August 2005

It’s been a tumultuous four years since we last heard from Garbage. While the band temporarily broke up, singer Shirley Manson left her husband, and new technologies made the electro-rock sound of their first three albums feel old, Garbage recently resurfaced in rude health on Bleed Like Me, a full out guitar album with preciously little electronics interfering. Their 2001-album, BeautifulGarbage, was a commercial flop, and it comes with no surprise that the band went back to their Version 2.0-roots on this new album. And they do not disappoint. Shirley Manson still growls through the tracks like a cat in heat as she saunters out a diary of tragic tales about lost loves, wild sexual escapades and hostile altercations. On Bleed Like Me, Garbage tries their hand at sweeping rock melodies and ballads, adding the odd electronic sputter, but all the while focusing on heavy drums and guitars. Songs like the first single, Why Do You Love Me and the happy, angry and deliriously unsettled Boys Wanna Fight stand out, as do the title track, Bleed Like Me – an eerie, moody and miraculous piece of music history in the vein of Lou Reed's Walk On The Wildside. Also worth a mention are Right Between The Eyes, the piano-driven It’s All Over But The Crying and the melodic Happy Home. It’s loud and angry in a Hole-meets-Blondie kind of way and will most likely not win Garbage many new fans. But, with Version 2.0 being the benchmark in their history, it’s still a remarkable return to form for them, and hopefully a glimpse at what the future might hold. Welcome back!
