Christo, Hartbeespoort. 17 August 2005

Rob Thomas, lead singer of the brilliant Matchbox 20 and the man behind Santana’s multi-Grammy Award-winning hit Smooth, recently released his debut solo album, Something To Be, to very mixed yet critical acclaim. The first single off the album, Lonely No More, is decidedly different from what we’ve come to expect from Mr. Thomas, but remains a glorious pop track that has become instantly recognizable and likeable. Where it would have been easy for Rob to follow the post-grunge/ alternative rock-route he’s taken on all the Matchbox albums, he almost deliberately chose a more mainstream pop direction – which is where most of the criticism lies, as the album sounds manufactured. But that criticism aside, Something To Be remains a fantastic debut album. Besides Lonely No More, songs like This Is How A Heart Breaks definitely stand out. My favourite songs are however the slower ones like Ever The Same (stunning!), When The Heartache Ends, All That I Am and My My My. The most obvious trait this album has in common with the work of Matchbox Twenty is Rob’s unassuming songwriting style. It is an eclectic mix of songs, but in my opinion still an accomplished piece of work, albeit a bit of a toss-up. If you consider Smooth to be his first real solo effort, nothing on Something To Be really matches it. But, on the other hand, it’s an album even Matchbox fans will like. Only time will tell how successful Rob Thomas will be as a solo artist, but until then, I’m definitely going to enjoy this album.
