A wonderful, quirky look at real people in a real world Cape Town. The Peculiars will leave you pausing and thinking "oh, I've been there", or "I wonder if it is that guy?". Thinking back now, I miss the characters dearly. A great read and would recommend it to anyone looking for a sweet joyful read.

This was an absolutely wonderful read. I'm not generally a fiction reader but enjoyed this thoroughly! It took some time to 'get into' it, but once I did, I really felt like I knew these people, understood their lives, their hopes, their fears, their dreams. Thorpe has a wonderful way of communicating the characters' emotions and making you feel as though you were in their shoes. And every now and then, in the midst of these make-believe but fascinatingly real people, the author slips in some bit of universal truth - surely a sign of a great writer and magnificent writing to come. If you've ever struggled with anything, if you've ever loved or been loved, if you've ever achieved or got close to achieving and most importantly, if you've ever been afraid of something or are afraid to do something now - this book is for you. Buy it, read it - you will be so happy you did.

The Peculiars is a simple story filled with accurate descriptions and situational humour. It's a Cape Town based story of people trying to over-come their phobias. The book is well written and has realistic and compelling characters. I was thoroughly entertained!
